Started in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired third-level names remained running.
